Lonely in the City

What does loneliness look like in an urban area? How is it possible to be alone while being surrounded by people? Feeling alone or lonely is not about the physical distance to other people, but more about being detached and alienated from the society we live in. Some people are lonely, because they do not have any social contact with their families and friends anymore. For some people loneliness may be of own choice. I am embarking on a little project of portraying what loneliness can look like in a city. Sometimes it is easy to recognize as in a homeless old woman, but most times loneliness is a volatile emotion, coming and going. Christmas time is an especially difficult period for many.

Refshaleøen is still a relatively unknown and ungentrified part of Copenhagen. It was once a fortress, later home for the famous shipbuilding company Burmeister & Wain and now a creative space with many exciting cultural and culinary experiences hidden behind its rugged industrial façade.

I stopped by La Banchina, which is worth a visit. It is a café/restaurant by the water, where it is possible to take a dip in the cold waters and then step into the sauna. After bathing, you can enjoy the bohemian atmosphere with a drink and delicious food.
